Biting is a perfectly normal habit in puppies, but it’s a behavior you want to address immediately. Puppy teeth may not make a dent, but the bite of a full-grown dog is a different story. Teaching your Golden Retriever puppy to not bite is an important part of his training. It’s necessary to remember that he’s not biting to be bad or to cause trouble. Biting is a normal activity for a puppy still learning from his mom and littermates. If he bites or plays too hard with another puppies, that puppy will yelp and stop the fun. If he’s too rough with an older dog, that dog will put him in his place. As the leader of his pack, it’s your job to outline behaviors that are fun, and behaviors that are no fun at all.

One of our jobs as responsible dog owners, of course, is to keep our dogs protected, but we may not always be able to protect them, and we may not always be able to stop them from biting through fear or when in pain.
What we can do is use brain training for dogs and teach them to bite inhibition when they’re young so that a potentially dangerous situation will not result in you losing your dog forever.
Why is Bite Inhibition Important?
Believe it or not, even the kindest dogs that have been trained from a young age never to bite can react to certain triggers. Those triggers are fear and pain. We never want our dogs to be faced with a situation where they feel like biting is the only answer, but the truth is, these situations come up every single day, and one day it could be your dog who is scared or in pain and just doesn’t know how to react.
By teaching bite inhibition while your puppy is young, you will be far safer and ready for any of these situations should they occur.
Training stage:
Teaching your Golden Retriever puppy to not bite doesn’t require a lot of equipment, but it does require persistence and patience. he should never be rewarded with attention or food after he bites. There are three methods below that describe how to train your puppy not to bite. Here are a few items you will need to get started:

➤ Bitter dog-friendly anti-chew spray.
➤ Delicious treats.
➤ A good plan to stop the biting.
The Talk to the Back Method
① Be conscious:
Make a list of all the times he tries to bite and be very aware of his behavior during these times.
② No means no fun:
When he does bite or even try, tell him “no” firmly.
③ Turn your back:
Turn your back to him, so play time stops and he gets the opposite of attention.
④ Give him attention:
When he calms down, resume play or give him the attention he wanted.
⑤ Use this method:
Stick with this method each time he tries to bite you. Eventually, he’ll learn that a bite is no fun and he’ll use his manners.
The Distracting Toy Method
① Know when he likes to bite:
Figure out the cases that most often end in a bite and be extra aware of those moments.
② Get his favorite toy:
Pick up one of his favorite toys, and keep it with you when he’s most likely to bite.
③ Initiate play:
start a play or any activity where he traditionally bites.
④ Tell him “no”:
When he bites, give him a firm ‘no’ and offer him the toy.
⑤ Repeat:
Each time he tries to bite, tell him ‘no’ and give him a toy to chew instead. Soon he should discover that biting a toy is more fun than biting you.
The Bitter Taste Method
① Get familiar with his habits:
Does he bite when he wants food or attention? Does he get mouthy during play time? Take note of these habits and be prepared to respond.
② Get some bitter spray:
You can buy bitter tasting dog spray at a pet store or make your own. Just be sure it’s safe for dogs to ingest and tastes bad to him.
③ Be ready for a bite:
Now that you know when he’s most likely to bite, spray the bitter liquid on your hands when those activities about to happen.
④ Say firmly “no”:
When he bites your hand, say “no” immediately. he should recoil when he tastes the bitter liquid and hearing “no” will reinforce that biting is not fun.
⑤ Stay consistent:
Keep that spray handy and spray your hands anytime he might bite. With consistency, he’ll learn that biting is not fun at all.
Other technique sometimes used is to make a small noise like when your hurt, making this noise when the puppy bites you, this will show him that he caused you pain, much like puppies like to play but don’t like to cause pain on their little brothers and sisters, this will most times alarm him enough to stop biting you.
Training a young puppy to stop biting is a crucial part of the process when your puppy first arrives to his new home. Ideally your golden retriever puppy should have got the idea that biting is not okay, this will make the following years of it’s growth and training more pleasant and will lower the risk of future aggression considerably.
Tips for Getting Through Your Puppy’s Mouthy Stage
- Adjust your expectations — Teaching your puppy bite inhibition can be a painful process for you and your family members. It is a process that sometimes lasts months, depending on your puppy. Be prepared for this, and remember that long-term results in your adult dog are more important than diminishing puppy bites (as painful as they may be).
- Control your puppy around children — If you have young children at home, you will have to think carefully about how you will protect them and your puppy. Little puppy teeth can cause a lot of pain, especially when your pup is still learning to control those urges. Young children can also cause a lot of pain to small puppies. Always supervise very carefully when your puppy and kids are together. If you can’t be right there, it’s better to use brain training for dogs program.
- A tired puppy is a happy puppy — It will be much easier to teach bite inhibition if your puppy is not jumping around. Make sure they get enough exercise every day. Not only will this help with training, but it will also help prevent all kinds of other destructive behavior.
